How a strong cover letter is structured
- Header: your contact details, the date and the employer’s name and address.
- Greeting: “Dear [Name],” – use the hiring manager’s name if the ad gives one.
- Opening: why this role – a concrete link instead of “I am writing to apply for …”.
- Body: two or three pieces of proof that you meet the key requirements, with examples from your resume.
- Closing: your availability and a clear request for a conversation.
- Sign-off: “Sincerely,” or “Kind regards,” and your name.
- Keep it to one page.
Phrases you can cut
They appear in almost every cover letter and say nothing about you. Use the space for proof.
- “To whom it may concern”
- “I am writing to apply for the position of …”
- “I am a hard-working team player.”
- “I believe I would be a great fit.” – show it instead.
Stronger openings
- “For [number] years I have made sure orders at [Company] ship the same day – I would like to bring that to your new warehouse in [City].”
- “Your ad asks for someone who doesn’t just answer customer questions but fixes their causes. That is what I did at [Company]: [result].”
